Silicones – what are they and how do they work?

Silicones are synthetic compounds that are produced based on organic silicone. Their task is to polish, smooth out and protect the hair from harmful factors coming from the external environment by leaving a coating on the hair surface. Silicones are used in 2-in-1 shampoos, leave-in conditioners, strong masks, silks and hairsprays. Silicones alleviate the action of SLS / SLES – one of the irritating components of most shampoos.

Silicones insoluble in water

Did you know that silicon may accumulate on the surface of your hair if you use the formulations for a long time? In this case, you must use a strong cleansing shampoo with SLS or SLES content, because these silicones cannot be removed with just water. Why use them then? Insoluble silicones provide the hair with shine and smoothing properties, without nourishing and regeneration.

Silicones soluble in water

This type of silicones is better for the hair in terms of action and the benefits it brings. Water-soluble silicones do not settle on the surface of the strands, they provide the hairstyle with a nice look, but more importantly, they provide a bit of nourishment. Thanks to the use of products with this type of silicones, the hair will not be overloaded and covered, and the hairstyle will be easier to arrange.

Silicones in cosmetics – for and against

If you are looking for hair care cosmetics with silicone content or you want to stay away from such products, look for the following names in INCI: silanol, silicone, siloxane, methicone, PEG. Are silicones necessary for hair care? There are as many followers as opponents of this theory. The use of cosmetics with silicone content is supported due to their protective function and effect that they provide after application. On the other hand, opponents claim that silicones weigh the strands down and prevent their proper functioning.
