Which vitamin C serum to choose?
Vitamin C occurs in three forms: L-ascorbic acid, oil and ethylated ascorbic acid. To choose the right one, you should take into account the effect you want to achieve and the type of your complexion.
Serum with L-ascorbic acid (Ascorbic Acid)
Vitamin C in the form of L-ascorbic acid is the most popular form used in cosmetics. It is classified as PHA acids, which can irritate sensitive skin. Products containing higher concentrations of L-ascorbic acid (above 20%) have exfoliating properties. Serum with this form of vitamin C is usually runny. For the serum with L-ascorbic acid to be effective, it should contain 15 to 20% of Ascrobic Acid.
Serum with vitamin C in the form of oil (Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate)
Vitamin C in this form is soluble in oils, which is why the serum has an oily consistency. It is not as effective as the serum with L-ascorbic acid, but systematically used, it give equally good results. Its concentration should be around 3-10%.
Serum with ethylated ascorbic acid (Ethyl Ascorbic Acid)
Ethylated ascorbic acid is a stable form of vitamin C which dissolves in water. For this reason, the serum has a runny consistency. The product should contain at least 10% Ethyl Ascorbic Acid.
How to use vitamin C serum?
This kind of serum should be included in your skincare daily routine, regardless of the age and season. Some women worry that vitamin C sensitizes the skin to the sun. Quite contrary, it supports the action of sunscreens and strengthens the protection against UVA and UVB radiation, which contribute to the skin aging. For this reason, it’s advisable to use vitamin C serums once a day (preferably in the morning).

- Clean your face with micellar water or wash it with water with a mild cleansing gel.
- Use hydrosol or toner to tone your skin.
- Apply vitamin C serum on moist skin.
- Once the serum absorbs, apply a moisturising cream with a UV protection.
- Apply make-up (optional).
If you prefer to use the serum before bedtime, apply in the same order as mentioned above.
